TTS Port Equipment AB is joining forces with software specialist Virtual Systems AB and computer simulation expert Dr Hyun Seok Kim, to build innovative new software to simulate logistic systems at RoRo terminals and to model the cargo-related structure of vessels.
The simulation tools will enable TTS to give its customers extensive support during the early stages of ship and terminal design, calculating the optimum cargo hold or identifying bottlenecks within a terminal with the use of cargo flow analysis prior to manufacture. Dr Kim has already begun running simulations, working with TTS client Stena Line.
Along with TBA in Delft, TTS has also been developing its cassette and AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) system by carrying out simulations on the new APMT terminal in Virginia, USA and benchmarking it against both the existing AGV systems in Hamburg and Rotterdam and the manual straddle carrier systems commonly used in container terminals. “The results clearly show that the TTS cassette and AGV system achieves the same productivity as the straddle carriers while deploying significantly fewer AGVs than at Rotterdam and Hamburg,” said Michel Lyrstrand, Research & Product Manager at TTS.
In support of these developments, TTS has also appointed Dr Lawrence Henesey who has recently graduated with a PhD in computer science and has conducted research on intelligent container management. “Dr Henesey has more than 15 years experience in the container business and will be a strong asset to TTS,” said Lennart Svensson, managing director of TTS Port Equipment AB. “He will work to develop business for the cassette system in container ports, and will help to build the simulation tool as well. He will also assist in analysing data from simulation results in order to identify new solutions and opportunities for the cassette system in container terminals.”
