Two lower deck plus two upper deck linkspans for Swedish port

TTS Port Equipment AB has secured a contract to design, manufacture and fit two double-tier linkspans for the contractor Skanska. The linkspans will be installed at Sweden’s Copenhagen Malmö Port, which is currently undergoing large-scale expansion with the building of new port facilities coupled with a move further away from Malmö city centre.

Skanska is the turnkey contractor for the port project, which includes the construction of three new terminals, two of which will handle ferry cargo and containers; the third will be a combi-terminal for railway traffic. TTS will be providing the two upper and lower deck linkspans, which will be installed at berths either side of the pier.

The 27 metre wide, 16 metre long lower deck linkspans will be hydraulically operated and adjustable to different levels to cater for the various RoRo and RoPax vessels serving the port. They will be hinged at the quay and supported by an integrated tower connecting both levels. In addition, the linkspans will feature a low noise interface function, making flaps unnecessary.

The upper deck linkspans will both be connected to a common area with an access ramp serving the two berths, and each will comprise an adjustable ramp together with a lifting ramp equipped with hydraulically operated flaps designed to rest on the vessel. The adjustable ramp will be positioned according to both tidal variation and the height of each berthing vessel. The lifting ramp will act as a bridge between the adjustable ramp and vessel and will follow its movements.

In addition, the lifting ramp will have the facility to be moved transversally in relation to the berth, allowing access to vessels with different beams and so increasing the installation’s versatility.

The equipment will be installed and ready for use by the beginning of 2011, in time for the opening of the new port facilities.
